The volleyball match was
significant, but the spirited competition took a backseat to
the special meaning of Tuesday night at St. Ursula.
With over a 1,000 fans in
attendance, according to athletic director Mike Sipes, the
Bulldogs (7-4, GGCL 1-1) defeated Ursuline 25-18, 22-25,
25-23, 17-25, 15-6 Tuesday night in a Girls’ Greater
Cincinnati League match.
The match was part of “Volley for
the Cure,” a statewide effort to raise awareness concerning
breast concern and research for the cure.
St. Ursula coach Julie Perry said
it was significant because junior outside hitter Courtney
Gagnon lost her mother to breast cancer last fall after a long
bout.
“There was a big sign for her and
we dedicated the game to her,” Perry said.
All the players wore pink
uniforms and the game ball was pink and white to commemorate
the evening.
“It was a sea of pink and at
sold-out capacity,” Perry said. “The spirit was amazing.”
The teams took a photo together
at the end of the match and will continue the second part of
the rivalry Sept. 27 at Ursuline.
