The Lakota
West’s girls' varsity volleyball team along with the
Colerain varsity players have dedicated their match on Thursday,
October 4 to "Volley for the Cure."
“Volley for the Cure is a volleyball game and an event that
is planned to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds for
the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” girl’s varsity assistant
coach Jody Googins said.
The cost for the event will be one dollar for students and
three dollars for adults wearing pink. The varsity game
starts at 7 p.m., the junior varsity team will be playing at
5:45, and the freshman team will be playing at 4:30.
This game is more than just a varsity match. There will be
raffles, split the pot, door prizes and other competitions.
“Even if you
aren’t a normal volleyball fan you will have fun with the
game,” Googins said.
There will be a
staff volleyball game. Also the marching band and American
Sign Language (ASL) and the West cheerleaders will be
performing. The whole
school is involved. The men's soccer team also plays
Colerain at home that night. To show their support, they
will be warming up in pink t-shirts.
The volleyball
team is holding various fundraisers. T-shirts are for sale
for five dollars in room 150. They will also be sold at home
volleyball games, home football games and the entire week
before the event during lunch.
“Survivor
volleyballs” are being sold for one dollar. You can buy a
ball if you know anyone who has been affected by breast
cancer. These will be displayed on Main Street.
This is not just
any volleyball game, this is a chance for West students to
help in finding a cure for breast cancer.
“Come out and
support the team,” Googins said. “Let’s ‘pack the stands
with pink’.”
If you would
like to make a donation to Volley for the Cure, you can
contact Googins in room 150 or email her at
jody.googins@lakotaonline.com.
The Lakota East
girl’s volleyball team hopes to fill the gym with a “sea of
pink” as they host a home match against Princeton on Oct. 4
to promote breast cancer awareness.
Breast Cancer
survivors will receive free admission that night and will
also be recognized in between the JV and Varsity games.
The "Volley for
the Cure" program is endorsed by the Ohio High School
Volleyball Coaches Association and benefits the Susan G.
Koman Foundation for Breast Cancer research. To raise money
for the event they are selling pink t-shirts during lunch
and at home football games for $5.00 apiece.
