Lakota West
figured they could counter with the league leading scorer, Matt
Bahner, a physical style of play and home field advantage.
Both teams
displayed the type of talent, discipline and heart that it has
taken them to get to this point in the season and remain
unbeaten. They played soccer the way it was meant to be played
with toughness, determination and passion. The fans weren’t
disappointed in what they saw and it was obvious that both of
these teams will be ready come tournament time.
What turned
out to be the winning goal came with 16:45 left in the game when
Seth Petrey of Mason place a beautiful free kick 6-yards from
the goal that was headed in by Kyle Tosh to give Mason a 3-1
lead.
Lakota West
countered with their second goal of the night when Bahner scored
the Firebirds' second goal and his tenth of the season.
Bahner
ripped a free kick from just outside the 18-yard line over the
heads of the Mason defenders and into the back of the net.
Goalie Mike Sparks appeared to have never seen the laser shot
that Bahner blasted past him. West would get no closer as time
ran out and so did their perfect season.
While West
would substitute one or two players at a time, Mason looked more
like a line change during a hockey match. Multiple players were
swapped out in timed intervals.
“We have a
very talented and deep team that I feel confident I can replace
anyone on the field with someone on the bench and not lessen our
level of play” said Mason Coach Paul Reddy.
Mason does
not have much time to celebrate the win as they have to travel
to the Hawks’ Nest of Lakota East tomorrow night to take on the
only other unbeaten GMC team. It will be quite an
accomplishment for the Comets to gain sole possession of the GMC
with back-to-back wins.
“Tomorrow
night we have another tough match. No game in the GMC is a
guaranteed win and I know Lakota East will be ready for us. I
hope our legs are fresh enough to play another game after one as
tough as this,” said Reddy.
