Eight MND Seniors Sign Letters Of Intent
Eight Mount
Notre Dame seniors signed letters of intent to continue their
athletic careers at the collegiate level. The young women and
their respective sports are: Jennifer Altimier and Rian Beckham
(soccer); Melissa Hersey (basketball); Erin Mackey and Natalie
Starvaggi (lacrosse); Ashley Meyer (softball); Katie Sowar
(field hockey); Cassie Vome (volleyball).
Two members
of MND’s soccer team, Jennifer Altimier and Rian Beckham, will
sign letters of intent. Jennifer, daughter of Mark and Leslie
Altimier of Loveland, who has earned a 4.22 weighted GPA, will
sign with East Tennessee State University and Rian, daughter of
Jeff and Julie Beckham of West Chester Township, with a weighted
GPA of 4.14, will sign with Xavier University.
Jennifer
has played varsity soccer for four years. She was named MVP of
the team and received First Team All-League Honors in 2005 and
2006 and All-City Honors in 2006. At MND, Jennifer is a member
of the Spanish Club. Regarding her achievement, Jen comments,
“With a lot of heart, passion, and hard work, anything is
possible.”
Rian has
played on MND’s varsity team for the past two years. She was
awarded MND’s Coach’s Award in 2006. She is a member of the Ohio
Elite soccer team which advanced as State Cup Finalists in
2003-2006. Rian currently serves as president of Student
Government and has served as secretary and vice president of
MND’s Class of 2007. She also serves as an MND ambassador and
is a member of Mission Commission and Student Task Force, a
service-oriented organization. When asked about playing soccer
at Xavier, Rian stated, “Playing soccer at the collegiate level
is a dream come true for me. It is such a great feeling to know
all of my hard work has finally paid off! I am very excited and
honored to receive the chance to play soccer at Xavier next
year.”
Melissa
Hersey, daughter Chris and Tracey Hersey of West Chester, will
continue her basketball career at Ohio Dominican University in
Columbus, Ohio. Melissa has earned a 4.71 weighted GPA. Melissa
has been a member of the varsity team all four years of her high
school career. Melissa’s team won three state basketball
championships in 2004, 2006, and 2007and was the state runner-up
in 2005. Melissa also plays varsity softball for MND and
volunteers with MND basketball camps during the summer at MND.
Two members
of MND’s lacrosse team, Erin Mackey and Natalie Starvaggi, are
continuing their lacrosse careers. Erin, daughter of Russell and
Karen Mackey of Lebanon, who has achieved a 5.09 weighted GPA,
will sign with Lafayette College (Easton, Pennsylvania) and
Natalie, daughter of Patrick and Mary Starvaggi of Loveland,
with a weighted 3.87 GPA, will sign with the University of
Cincinnati.
Erin played
one year on the reserve lacrosse team and three years on
varsity. She serves as an MND ambassador and as a board member
of MND’s National Honor Society and Mission Commission.
Additionally, Erin volunteers as a youth team leader with the
Challenge program at Royalmont Academy. When asked about her
athletic achievement, Erin replied, “Intensity is the key
factor, without it all the fun of the game is gone.”
Natalie has
also played one year on the reserve lacrosse team and three
years on the varsity. She was named MVP her junior year and
served as team captain during her junior and senior years. She
was named Second Team GGCL her sophomore year and First Team
GGCL her junior year. Natalie also played soccer for MND,
serving as captain of that team and was named MVP her senior
year. At MND, Natalie is a member of the Notre Dame Club,
Spanish Club, and Video Production Club. She served on the
Strategic Planning Steering Committee Task Group for Athletics
and at the Sisters of Notre Dame International Convention.
Natalie also serves on the prom committee and as a homeroom
class representative.
Ashley
Meyer, daughter of Don and Sandy Meyer of Dillonvale, will sign
a letter of intent to Urbana University (Urbana, Ohio) for
softball. Ashley has earned a 4.03 weighted GPA. Ashley played
on the MND varsity team for four years and, as a sophomore, she
earned Honorable Mention status in the GGCL. As a junior, she
garnered the Outstanding Player Award, was named First Team GGCL,
and Honorable Mention in the all-city GGCL. At MND, Ashley is a
member of Caring Cougars, Hands Across Campus, Video Production
Club, and the Environmental Club. Ashley is involved in
community service at Linden Gove School and also teaches
softball techniques to young students at Winton Woods. She is a
member of the select summer fast pitch softball team, Ohio Lynx.
Katie Sowar,
daughter of Ann Guiler and Nick Sowar of West Chester, will
continue her collegiate career at DePauw University
(Greencastle, Indiana) for field hockey. Katie has earned a 4.95
weighted GPA. Katie has served as captain of her MND junior
varsity and varsity field hockey teams. She was named MND’s
Offensive MVP in her sophomore and senior year. She also
achieved the All-Conference Second Team her senior year. In the
Under 17 category, Katie was named top goal scorer her freshman
and sophomore years and Player of the Year her sophomore year.
She is also a member of the Centurions Field Hockey Select Team
and served as captain for the past three years. At MND, Katie
served as co-president of the Cougar Spirit and Peer Ministry.
She is a member of Adopt-a-sis, Big Sis/Little Sis, and the
Notre Dame Club. She also serves as an MND ambassador.
Cassie Vome,
daughter of Gary and Cheri Vome of Mason, will play volleyball
at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus. Cassie has earned a
4.63 weighted GPA. Cassie played one year on the freshman
volleyball team, one year on the reserve team and two years on
varsity. In her junior year the team advanced to the state
final four and in her senior year the team took home the
Division I state championship. At MND, Cassie is a member of
the Stock Club, Mission Commission and Spanish Club. She also
plays club volleyball with the Cincy Classics.
