Lakota East Gymnastics Returning To State
The Lakota East gymnastics team won its second consecutive
Southwest District Championship on Saturday and will return to
Columbus for another run at a state title.
East produced its highest team
score of the season edging out Northmont by a slim margin of
135.55-135.25 in the 15-team event.
“They showed that they can compete under pressure when it
counts,” said East head coach Margi Sammons. “The team competed
consistently and confidently. We started out as the first team
up in the competition on beam and all six girls nailed their
routines. That gave us confidence and momentum to hit our
routines all day long.”
The Thunderhawks came away
with a bevy of recognitions and awards. Named to the
All-District team were Abbey Cramer, Jessica Derickson, Meghan
Jones, Megan Duthie and Codie Owens. Kira Krick and Jessica
Derickson were named Scholar Athletes. Lakota East won the Team
Sportsmen of the Year Award also. Coaches Mardi and Margi
Sammons were recognized as District Coaches of the Year.
“They worked so hard all season long for this title,” said
Sammons. “I am really proud of each of them.” Next weeks State
meet will once again be held at Hilliard Darby High School, near
Columbus, Ohio, beginning Friday, Feb. 29.
