The Lakota East boy’s
golf team produced another GMC title last week, winning the
conference championship for the second year in a row.
The Hawks did it with
a comeback effort on the back nine at Weatherwax Golf Course
edging Sycamore by a two-stroke margin (611-613).
East was led by GMC,
first-team players Doug Rees (150), Aidan Javed (151) and David
Tepe (153).
“The entire team
played great, but Doug Rees was the catalyst this week,” said
East head coach Jeff Combs. “Lately he has been practicing much
harder with a purpose and it really showed today.”
Charlie Martin was
solid as usual with a second team GMC performance of 157.
“Charlie battled so
hard both days,” said Combs. “He knew for us to win we needed
him to shoot par the last six or seven holes.”
Logan Duderstadt
(164) and Ryan Finney (163) got a taste of their first GMC
Tourney and showed signs of success. Both guys played solidly
with Finney shooting a 38 on the back nine.
Colerain's Justin
Epure was medalist with an even-par 144 (two day total). Lakota
West freshman Korey Ward, whose final-round 70 featured a
4-under 32 on the back nine, was the runner-up at 146.
Middletown was third in the team standings, followed by
Fairfield and Lakota West.
"I was so proud of
them regardless of where we finished,” added Combs. “It is very
rewarding to see your team play so well physically, emotionally
and mentally under pressure.”
The Hawks will now
concentrate their attention on preparing for the upcoming
sectional, district and hopefully state tournaments.
