Oak Hills Survives In Overtime

Steigerwald kicks winning FG

By Ed Letsinger

Oak Hills’ Justin Steigerwald’s leg saved the day and made for a happy homecoming in the Highlanders’ 23-20 overtime win over Fairfield on Friday night.

The senior wide receiver who also handles kicking duties for Oak Hills drilled a 30-yard field goal in overtime to give Oak Hills a hard-fought win over the Indians in a Greater Miami Conference game at Betz Memorial Stadium.

Steigerwald added field goals of 42 and 25 yards in the second half and converted both PATs to account for almost half of the Highlanders’ points on the evening.

Oak Hills (3-6, 2-4 GMC) had all they could handle from a winless Fairfield (0-9, 0-6) team that battled hard all night.

The Indians, trailing 20-12 late in the fourth quarter, rallied and tied the game with 2:42 left on a 24-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Justin McCray to senior wide receiver Robert Corson Jr., followed by a 2-point PAT pass from McCray to Damon Taylor.

McCray turned in a big performance, throwing for 151 yards on 14-of-25 attempts and a touchdown and adding 106 yards rushing on 16 attempts and two touchdowns.  The speedy left-hander was picked off three times.

McCray had given Fairfield a 12-7 halftime lead on an 80-yard touchdown run on a keeper up the middle in the first quarter followed by a 17-yard touchdown run with 3:25 left in the half.

Oak Hills had gotten on the board first on an 8-play 43-yard drive in the opening quarter capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Steve Gebing.

Gebing had 101 yards of total offense on the night including 53 through the air and 48 rushing.

Oak Hills started the second half with a bang when Jake Proctor returned the opening kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown giving the Highlanders a 14-12 lead.

It was all Steigerwald the rest of the way, the senior kicking three field goals in the second half including the game-winner.

Fairfield out-gained Oak Hills 318-218.  Jonathan Kraft complemented McCray with 42 yards rushing on nine carries and three receptions for 33 yards.  Ryan McHenry led Oak Hills with 55 yards rushing on 10 carries.
