Three teams advance to state title games

Northern Kentucky will have three football teams playing for state titles this weekend at Papa John’s Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

A total of six state championship games will be played on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8 at Papa John's Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

Beechwood (12-2) takes on Lexington Christian (11-3) in Class 1A on Friday.  The Tigers advanced to their first state title game since 2004 be beating Frankfort 49-17 in the semifinals.

 

Unbeaten and top-ranked Highlands (14-0) plays later that night at 7:30 p.m. against Bowling Green (13-1) in a Class 5A tilt.  The Bluebirds jumped out to a commanding 49-0 halftime lead over Lincoln County in the semifinals and coasted to a 49-21 win.  Highlands will be going for its 17th state title in school history.  Bowling Green enters the contest on a 12-game winning streak.  Their lone loss this season was to Class 6A powerhouse Louisville Trinity 39-28 in week two. 

Newport Central Catholic (13-1) goes for their third straight state title on Saturday morning, Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in Class 2A against Fort Campbell (12-2).  NCC won state titles the past two years in Class 1A.  The Thoroughbreds advanced with a 31-3 win over DeSales in semifinal play.
