Football Goes 4-For-4 In Regional Finals
Four teams
advance to state semis
By Ed Letsinger
Kentucky
high school football expanded to a six-class system this year
and Northern Kentucky has made the most of it so far by
sending four schools to the state semifinals this week.
In Class 1A,
Beechwood continues to roll through the opposition as the
Tigers set their sights on its first state title since 2004.
Beechwood racked up over 400 yards of total offense in a 42-7
rout of Louisville Holy Cross in a regional final contest at
Beechwood. Up next for the Tigers (11-2) is a road game at
Frankfort (11-2).
Newport
Central Catholic battled back from a 16-7 deficit and went on
to defeat Corbin in a Class 2A showdown at NCC. NCC and
Corbin came into the game ranked Nos. 1-2 in the final
Associated Press poll. NCC, a two-time Class 1A defending
state champion that moved up to 2A this season, continues its
quest for a third straight state title with a semifinals
contest against DeSales.
Highlands
thumped its third straight opponent with a 52-12 thumping of
an out-manned Letcher County Central in a Class 5A battle at
Highlands. The Bluebirds (13-0) have outscored their
opponents by a 142-12 count as it rolls toward a 17th
state title and will host Lincoln County in the semifinals.
Boone County
(10-3) survived the aerial assault of Shelby County and pulled
out a 45-35 win over the Rockets in a Class 6A contest at
Boone County. Shelby County quarterback Alex Mathews passed
for 293 yards and five touchdowns, but the Rebels offset his
performance with a punishing ground attack led by Cory Farris,
who rushed for 263 yards on 53 carries and four touchdowns.
The Rebels face a tall task this weekend against defending
state champion Louisville Trinity at the Shamrocks' home field.
