Sycamore Prevails In Overtime

Aves rally for first win of the year

By Ed Letsinger

It took Sycamore and Mason more than three quarters to get going in a Greater Miami Conference opener for both teams on Friday night on the Aves’ home floor.

But a sluggish game turned into a barnburner in the fourth quarter and overtime where Sycamore eventually prevailed 49-39.

Tied at 36, the Aviators (1-1, 1-0 GMC) scored the first five points in overtime and Mason never got closer than four points the rest of the way.  Sycamore outscored Mason 13-3 in the extra session.

Junior guard Steve Hull scored six points in overtime and a game-high 16 points to lead Sycamore.  Senior center Deante Johnson and junior guard Brett Simek added 10 points each.  Simek also had eight rebounds and three steals.

Trailing Mason 26-20 entering the fourth quarter, Hull scored seven points to lead the Aves’ comeback.  The Comets (1-1, 0-1 GMC) had led 34-29 at the 2:57 mark of the fourth quarter on a basket by Jordan Heatherly, but the Aves ended regulation on a 7-2 run to force overtime.

Senior guard Scott Dennis came up with the Aves’ biggest play in regulation with 54 seconds remaining with a steal and 3-point play to give Sycamore a 36-34 lead.

Mason’s Sean Decker knotted the score at 36-36 with two clutch free throws with 40.2 seconds remaining and a steal by Mason guard Austin Brune on the ensuing possession gave Mason a shot at a win in regulation.

With the game tied at 36, Mason guard Chris Izurieta had a good look at a game-winning jumper from about 15 feet but his shot rimmed out at the buzzer.

The Aves led 19-16 at halftime and then went cold in a third quarter that saw them score just one point on a Hull free throw with 35 seconds left in the quarter.  But Mason did not take advantage, scoring only 10 points to take a 6-point lead.

Scoring was at a premium throughout most of the night with Sycamore shooting just 34.5 percent from the floor, with Mason connecting on 31.4 percent.

Comets’ junior center Luke Sutphin paced Mason with eight points.
