Senior Tia
McBride scored on a lay-up with 24 seconds to go in the game to
tie the score at 67.
With the
clock running down, Lakota West coach Andy Fishman called a
final timeout with 10.7 seconds left to set up his offense,
enabling Mount Notre Dame to set up their out of bounds defense.
MND junior
Gabby Smith tipped the ball away from West, and the ball went to
McBride who quickly passed the ball up court to point guard
Ashley Fowler. With less than five seconds on the clock Fowler
covered the last 45-feet as she fed the ball to Reynolds who
laid the ball in as the horn sounded.
The ending
wasn't without controversy.
Many
in
attendance noted that the red light had come on while the ball
remained in Reynolds' hand and the basket should not have
counted. TV replays appeared to confirm their doubts but OHSAA
assistant commissioner Hank Zaborniak said the ruling on the
court would stand because there is no process for video
replays/appeals on the high school level.
Referee
Lance Jacob who trailed the play and signaled the basket was
good couldn’t be found after the game as he raced off the court.
Zaborniak
later relayed the message to the media that Jabob was convinced
the basket was good and didn’t second guess his call.
Tears
filled both sidelines as celebration and heart break filled the
arena.
It was
definitely a game for the ages according to several tournament
officials and media in attendance and will likely go down as one
of if not the best final game in
Ohio
high school girls' basketball tournament history.
Mount Notre
Dame (26-2) ended the year on a 24-game winning streak after
starting out the season 2-2. One of those losses was to
West 61-55 in the season opener.
West (26-2)
had entered the state title game riding a 12-game winning streak
with their only prior loss coming to Division III and state
semifinalist Regina.
It was the
first time that two Cincinnati-area schools have met in a girls'
basketball state title game.
"Everyone
of these girls are champions in my book," said an emotional West
coach Andy Fishman after the game. "It doesn’t matter what the
scoreboard says…to lose the final game on a play like that…no
one can say you aren’t a champion," he added as his eyes swelled
with tears.
McBride, who carried the Cougars in the third quarter with 15
points, scored 24 points while earning tournament MVP honors.
Gabby Smith scored 14 and Ashley Fowler added 11.
Junior Alexis Rogers led West with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Amber Gray had 23 points and 11 rebounds.
