Indian Hill Blasts Mariemont

Hot-shooting Braves roll 74-57

By Ed Letsinger

Indian Hill came into its game against Cincinnati Hills League rival Mariemont riding a three-game losing streak and looking for a win to get their season back on track.

The Braves (6-7, 6-3 CHL) managed to do just that with an explosive second half offensive effort en route to a relatively easy 74-57 road win.

The Warriors defeated Indian Hill 47-43 back on Dec. 7 but it was a much different story this time around.

Indian Hill, leading just 30-26 at halftime, outscored the Warriors 28-9 in the decisive third quarter and opened up a lead as large as 69-40 midway through the fourth quarter before emptying the bench.

“That’s the best we’ve shot it all year long,” said Indian Hill head coach David Moss.  “We got a lot of our points in transition and off of turnovers.”

One of those players who shot it well was senior forward Joe Renneker, who scored a team-high 17 points.

“Joe Renneker really carried us early almost to a point where all the guys were just standing around and watching,” said Moss.

Renneker scored 11 points in the opening quarter on 5-of-8 shooting as Indian Hill bolted to a quick 18-6 lead.  Mariemont scrapped its way back into the game behind Freeman Jordan (8) and Will Kippins (7), who combined for 15 second quarter points to get the Warriors within four points of Indian Hill by halftime.

A 17-4 Indian Hill run to open the second half was too much for Mariemont to overcome a second time as the game quickly got away from them.  Like Renneker in the first quarter, senior Jon Von Deylen took over in the third quarter, scoring nine of his 11 points to lead the onslaught.

Billy Masur led Mariemont (5-8, 4-6) with a game-high 18 points.  Jordan and Kippins both added 11 points for the Warriors, who lost their fifth straight game.

Indian Hill, as Moss readily admitted, has been up-and-down all season, losing four of their first five games, then winning four straight before losing their next three heading into the Mariemont game.  But he is encouraged in what he sees with his team.

“We’re playing well as a team right now and with a lot of effort,” said Moss.  “We just need to keep rebounding the ball better and playing well in transition.”
