This
overtime win gave the Bulldogs a district crown but the Colonels
still advance to the Ninth Region tournament that begins next
week.
Henderson
poured in a game-high 30 points and grabbed five rebounds to
lead Holmes. The 6-foot guard was especially clutch in
overtime, scoring 11 of Homes’ 15 points including a perfect
8-of-8 from the free throw line. He finished the game shooting
10-of-16 from the field and 10-of-11 from the line.
Tied at 57
at the end of regulation,
Henderson
scored on a three-point play on Holmes’ opening possession in
overtime and the Bulldogs never relinquished the lead.
CovCath
stayed close throughout the extra period and cut the lead to
66-65 on a three-point play by senior guard Chris Bondick with
1:29 left. Henderson answered with two free throws. CovCath
had another chance to cut the lead to 1 again with 16.4 left but
Michael Grimes missed the front end of a bonus. Two Henderson
free throws and two more from sophomore forward Ricardo Johnson
iced the game.
The
Colonels had battled back from a 50-43 fourth quarter deficit –
their biggest of the night – and outscored Holmes 14-7 in the
final four minutes to force overtime. A 3-pointer by junior
guard Mitch Shover with 31.8 seconds knotted the score at 57. A
Henderson lay-up was blocked out of bounds by Luke Maile with
4.9 seconds left, and Grimes deflected the ensuing inbounds pass
as Holmes did not get off a shot.
The first
half was tight throughout, with both teams enjoying leads of no
larger than six points.
Holmes
(27-2) shot 51.8 percent from the field for the game including a
blistering 62.5 percent in the first half. The Bulldogs
out-rebounded CovCath 38-26 for the game.
Holmes’
senior forward Terrance Clark complimented Henderson with 12
points including 8 in the fourth quarter. Ricardo Johnson added
11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Covington
Catholic (19-8) placed four players in double figure scoring led
by Shover’s 20 points. Bondick added 16 points followed by J.D.
Schmerge (13) and Maile (12).
The
Colonels out-scored Holmes 27-3 from 3-point range but shot just
40.7 percent for the game.
