Highlands Slips By CovCath

Late basket gives ’Birds 53-52 win

Highlands kept its perfect record against local competition intact last night by beating Covington Catholic 53-52 before a large crowd on the Colonels’ home court.

A layup by sophomore Stephen Kowolonek in the waning seconds gave the No. 3-ranked Bluebirds (10-1) their biggest win of the season.

Covington Catholic (11-3) came into the game ranked No. 2 in the coaches’ poll and lost for the first time this season against a Northern Kentucky opponent.

Kowolonek scored 10 points and was one of three Bluebirds in double figures in scoring.  Senior guard Greg McGraw scored a game-high 18 points while Nic Simpson added 10 points.

Michael Grimes scored 14 points to lead CovCath.

CovCath jumped out to a 21-12 first quarter lead but Highlands chipped away to knot the score at 26 by halftime.  Both teams traded leads throughout a tight second half.

Highlands lone loss of the season is a 70-52 setback to Shelby County in late December.  Both of CovCath’s losses prior to last night’s game were to Mason County.
