Top Four Seeds Win DI District Titles

Smaller division schools  have rough weekend

The top four seeds in Southwest Ohio won Division I girls' basketball district titles on Saturday afternoon at Harrison High School and advance to regional play beginning this week.

Top seeded Lakota West (23-1), ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press poll had its hands full against Chaminade-Julienne most of the game but prevailed 44-35, setting up a contest against No. 12 Pickerington Central (21-3) on Wednesday night at Otterbein College in the Westerville Regional.

No. 2 Mount Notre Dame continued their hot play, thumping Walnut Hills 63-48.  The two-time defending state champion Cougars (22-2) extended their winning streak to 20 games.    They will take on No. 8 Springboro (22-2) in a Fairborn Regional semifinal contest on Wednesday night at Wright State University.

Oak Hills (20-4), unranked at the state level, thumped Beavercreek 45-33 to set up an interesting rematch against No. 13 Winton Woods (23-1) in the other half of the Fairborn bracket.  The Highlanders are the only team to beat the Warriors this season, a 58-47 win back on Dec. 28.  Winton Woods enters the contest riding a 16-game winning streak while Oak Hills has won its last seven.

The Cincinnati smaller-division schools took it on the chin over the weekend, with only Badin advancing to regional play in Division III with a 50-39 win over Georgetown.  The Rams (18-6), ranked No. 14, face a tall task on Wednesday night at Butler High school when they take on No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Versailles (24-0) in the Vandalia Regional.

Miami East ended Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy’s perfect season with a 43-26 win over the Eagles while Roger Bacon fell to Versailles 42-33 in Division III.  In Division II, Carroll took care of Wyoming 60-37 while Alter hammered Taft 66-34.

Seven Hills bowed out in Division IV, losing 70-63 to Franklin-Monroe.
