“He just
took over when we needed baskets and that’s what seniors do,”
said Seven Hills head coach Willie Hill. Added Kohn: “Everyone
looks up to you when you’re a senior so you do what you have to
do to help pull out a game like this. I just had to step up and
take control of the game.”
Kohn was
8-for-11 from the field including four 3-pointers and was
10-of-11 from the free throw line.
The
Stingers (10-1, 8-1 MVC) extended their winning streak to 10
games after losing their season opener to North College Hill
back on Nov. 27. They got revenge against the three-time
defending state champion Trojans this past Tuesday with a 75-66
win, becoming the first MVC team in five years to defeat NCH.
Seven Hills
did not safely put the game away until sophomore forward Jake
Davis dropped in two free throws with 1.6 seconds left in
overtime to seal the win.
Kohn scored
five points in overtime including a three-point play with 2:02
left to give the Stingers a 67-64 lead. CHCA answered on a Nick
Mundy tip-in and a free throw by Seven Hills’ senior guard Damon
Johnson with 1:23 put the Stingers up one at 68-66.
Two free
throws by CHCA’s Wes Carlson knotted the game at 68 at the 48.1
mark and Kohn answered with two free throws at the 34.2 mark to
give Seven Hills a 70-68 lead.
A Carlson
turnover with 13.8 seconds left gave the ball back to Seven
Hills but off a timeout sophomore Alex Hill inexplicably threw
the ball away on an out-of-bounds pass.
CHCA had
one last chance for the win or to force a second overtime but
junior guard Peter Edwards missed on a drive to the basket in
the waning seconds.
The Eagles
(5-5, 4-4) had trailed the entire game until an Edwards’ free
throw with 1:38 left in regulation had given CHCA a 62-61 lead.
After Seven Hills’ Davis missed the front end of a bonus Carlson
drilled two more free throws with 36.4 seconds left for a 64-61
lead and a stunning comeback victory was close at hand for CHCA.
But Kohn
answered. After missing on a 3-point attempt, the Stingers kept
possession and he converted on a three-point play on a drive in
the lane at the 16.1 mark to tie the score at 64.
CHCA’s
Edwards was almost the hero in regulation but his last-second
3-pointer rimmed out forcing overtime.
Seven Hills
jumped out to a quick 20-8 first quarter lead and led 31-22 at
the half. But a resilient CHCA slowly fought back and had cut
the lead to six entering the fourth quarter.
“That’s the
way it is in this league on any given night,” said Hill. “There
was a huge momentum change but I’m proud of how our kids stayed
in the game.”
For Seven
Hills, joining Kohn in double figure scoring was Davis (11) and
junior guard L.T. Burke (11).
Edwards had
a stellar game off the bench for CHCA. The junior guard scored
a team-high 20 points including 16 in the second half. Carlson
added 18 points for the Eagles.
