CovCath Cruises Past Dixie Heights

Colonels win fourth straight game

By Ed Letsinger

Covington Catholic looks like they are peaking at the right time of the season as they showed on Friday night against Dixie Heights in a battle between two of the top five ranked teams in Northern Kentucky.

The No. 3-ranked Colonels (17-7) won their fourth straight game 58-45 over No. 5 Dixie Heights on senior night before a loud and packed house at CovCath.

Dixie (16-9) came into the game winners of nine of their last 11 games but was never really in the game after the first quarter.  Their only lead of the night was 2-0 in the opening minute.

CovCath led 17-12 early in the second quarter before going on a 13-0 run and eventually took a commanding 35-18 lead into halftime.  Junior forward Luke Maile led the offensive charge by scoring nine points in the quarter as CovCath outscored Dixie 20-8.

The Colonels went cold in the third quarter scoring just six points but Dixie did not capitalize, scoring just 10 of their own.  Both teams shot a combined 6-of-23 from the field in the quarter.  Dixie cut the lead to 37-26 at the 2:17 mark but could get no closer the rest of the night.

The CovCath lead stayed in double digits during the final quarter, bouncing between 11 and 17 points.

Senior guard Chris Roll scored nine points in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer, 2-point basket and four free throws in the final minute.  Roll scored a game-high 15 points on a solid 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.  Maile added 11 points for CovCath.

Junior forward Stephen Pompilio paced Dixie with 14 points.  Center Luke Mace added 10 points.

CovCath has lost only three games to Northern Kentucky competition this season and they all came during a seven day stretch between Jan. 9 and 15 to top-five ranked teams No. 4 Highlands, No. 2 Boone County and No. 1 Holmes.

The Colonels wrap up regular season play next week with games against Simon Kenton and Bishop Brossart before the 36th District tournament begins the following week.

Dixie has three games remaining against Campbell County, Franklin County and Boone County before beginning 34th District tournament play.
